This activity involves negotiation about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the government, NGOs and the media in a democracy. It develops an understanding of the link between rights and responsibilities as well as a feeling for the complex relations between the different sectors in a democracy. In this activity, participants draw, contemplate and discuss their hopes and concerns for the future of their generation. This activity involves a survey of people in the community to explore voting in elections and civic participation. Students develop skills to find out and analyse information critically and learn about the importance of  valuing the personal contribution of every citizen in a democracy. Developing a class agreement

In this activity  students gain an understanding of the difficulties and processes involved in treaty negotiations. It will help them to appreciate the relationship between establishing a code of rights & responsibilities, and  living up to an agreed standard of behaviour within everyday occurences. With an emphasis on group participation in the creation and protection of rights, an agreed set of rules and responsibilities is established for the group. Curriculum values of equity - Tika/pono and respect for others - Manaaki/ãwhi, are emphasised. (Part of the HRiE School Resource Kit)
