This resource has been developed to help equip teachers - particularly those teaching levels 4-6 social studies of the New Zealand Curriculum - with some key tools to develop the human rights learning essential to effective citizenship in the 21st century.

This activity involves small group work, imagination, and drawing in order to explore issues of gender equality and discrimination against women. While developing understanding and appreciation of the goals of equality and gender balance, students develop imagination and creativity to envision the future and to promote justice and respect. Compass - The impact of the internet

This activity involves both small group and plenary discussions to analyse issues of the future of the Internet and the use of the Internet for the promotion of human rights. This activity involves a survey of people in the community to explore voting in elections and civic participation. Students develop skills to find out and analyse information critically and learn about the importance of  valuing the personal contribution of every citizen in a democracy. Compass - Trade Union Meeting

This more complex activity is a simulation of a meeting between an employer and employees together with their trade union representatives to negotiate wages and conditions. The issues addressed include the role of trade unions, the collective bargaining in the workplace and workers' rights. While understanding the role of trade unions, students develop consensus decision making skills. (Part of the Compass HRE manual)

Compass - When tomorrow comes

This activity uses information sheets and discussion to explore issues about the rights of criminals, the death penalty and the protection of society from criminals. It aims is to examine preconceptions about criminals and reflect on some of the implications of the death penalty. (Part of the Compass HRE manual)

Developing a class agreement

In this activity  students gain an understanding of the difficulties and processes involved in treaty negotiations. It will help them to appreciate the relationship between establishing a code of rights & responsibilities, and  living up to an agreed standard of behaviour within everyday occurences. With an emphasis on group participation in the creation and protection of rights, an agreed set of rules and responsibilities is established for the group. Curriculum values of equity - Tika/pono and respect for others - Manaaki/ãwhi, are emphasised. (Part of the HRiE School Resource Kit)
