Compass - Making Links

This activity involves negotiation about the rights and responsibilities of citizens, the government, NGOs and the media in a democracy. Compass - Power Station

As power is often associated with violence, this activity uses creative group work to address issues of violence in the community, and ways to solve the problems of violence. Compass - Responding to Racism

This activity uses role-play and reviewing of a critical incident to provoke participants to review their understanding of cultural difference. It also involves discussion and collective writing to address issues about the difficulties of stepping outside one’s own cultural perspective and racism, stereotypes and cultural differences as well. Compass - The language barrier

This activity is a simulation of the difficulties that refugees face when applying for asylum: from the frustrations and emotional factors, while overcoming the language barrier to the discrimination during the application procedure. It demonstrates the importance of both language and intercultural education and develops empathy through being aware of the frustrations refugees face when applying for asylum. This activity involves a survey of people in the community to explore voting in elections and civic participation. Compass - Trade Union Meeting

This more complex activity is a simulation of a meeting between an employer and employees together with their trade union representatives to negotiate wages and conditions. The issues addressed include the role of trade unions, the collective bargaining in the workplace and workers' rights. Creating Classroom Rules

The importance of classroom climate and the need for participation and cooperation cannot be emphasised enough. The children’s suggestions and opinions are also very helpful in creating the best classroom atmosphere. Be open to their help and provide necessary changes.The following activity is very significant because it has a direct effect on classroom climate. It clearly demonstrates a teacher’s willingness to involve the class in how the classroom is run and her or his own trust in its members. It also makes children think about what rules are desirable and possible in class, how they might be observed and the teacher’s own role in maintaining the classroom environment.
