Compasito Human Rights Education Handbook

Compasito will provide you with ideas, inspiration and practical help to explore human rights with children. Designed by the Council of Europe and thoroughly tested internationally Compasito includes various rights-based classroom activities suitable for Years 1-10 students. Compass - Access to medicaments

This activity is based on a case, which came before the South African high court in 2001. In the activity, students weigh both sides of the trial: the right to property of the Pharmacia Companies and the right to life in health and dignity of the people living in the fear of AIDS. Compass - All equal, All different

In this activity, students have to date two texts and to guess who the authors were and where they lived. The subsequent discussions are about the equality of people and the right to non-discrimination, the right to rights and freedom without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, religion, etc.. Compass - Different wages

In this activity, participants have to locate and match pairs of cards as they think out about the inequalities of educational provision world-wide and how to achieve “Education for All”. Compass - Horoscope of Poverty

This activity combining knowledge and creative composition explores issues about the consequences of poverty and the opportunities in life, which are denied to the poor. Students reflect on both the lack of opportunities poor people have, and the difficulties they face in taking those which are presented. Thus, they understand the cycle of poverty and can promote social justice, human dignity and responsibility.

Compass - Path to Equality-land

This activity involves small group work, imagination, and drawing in order to explore issues of gender equality and discrimination against women. While developing understanding and appreciation of the goals of equality and gender balance, students develop imagination and creativity to envision the future and to promote justice and respect. Compass - Work and Babies

This role-play activity deals with issues of rights in the workplace and discrimination against women in the workplace and develops knowledge about women’s reproductive rights. The activity also attempts to make participants appreciate what it feels like to be discriminated against. (Part of the Compass HRE manual)

CyberDodo

CyberDodo.com is a fun interactive website for young children children. The site is dedicated to Defending Life and focuses on the Rights of the Child and the sustainability. CyberDodo.com offers numerous resources including games, cartoons, quizzes, information files and e-cards along.
Developing a class agreement

In this activity  students gain an understanding of the difficulties and processes involved in treaty negotiations. It will help them to appreciate the relationship between establishing a code of rights & responsibilities, and  living up to an agreed standard of behaviour within everyday occurences. With an emphasis on group participation in the creation and protection of rights, an agreed set of rules and responsibilities is established for the group. Curriculum values of equity - Tika/pono and respect for others - Manaaki/ãwhi, are emphasised. (Part of the HRiE School Resource Kit)
