Compass - The language barrier

This activity is a simulation of the difficulties that refugees face when applying for asylum: from the frustrations and emotional factors, while overcoming the language barrier to the discrimination during the application procedure. It demonstrates the importance of both language and intercultural education and develops empathy through being aware of the frustrations refugees face when applying for asylum. Compass - Trade Union Meeting

This more complex activity is a simulation of a meeting between an employer and employees together with their trade union representatives to negotiate wages and conditions. The issues addressed include the role of trade unions, the collective bargaining in the workplace and workers' rights. Discussion activity in which people explore their experiences of inter-personal violence. Students should be able to identify oneself not only as an object of violence but also as someone who could be a source of violence and are encouraged to deal with violence in positive ways. This activity uses information sheets and discussion to explore issues about the rights of criminals, the death penalty and the protection of society from criminals. Developing a class agreement

In this activity  students gain an understanding of the difficulties and processes involved in treaty negotiations. It will help them to appreciate the relationship between establishing a code of rights & responsibilities, and  living up to an agreed standard of behaviour within everyday occurences. With an emphasis on group participation in the creation and protection of rights, an agreed set of rules and responsibilities is established for the group. Curriculum values of equity - Tika/pono and respect for others - Manaaki/ãwhi, are emphasised. (Part of the HRiE School Resource Kit)
